15 years ago, a mysterious "Ray Ring" of light appeared, encircling the world, thereafter on occasion dropping mysterious objects called RUMs to the ground, which cause small localized disaster areas. The objects are predicted and the disasters contained, so the RUMs are largely ignored by the public. Under this incredible backdrop, the ordinary Seita Tooki has just been confessed to by his lifelong enemy, Awayuki Kujou. Before he can give her a proper reply, a RUM unexpectedly descends, surveys the situation, and proceeds to kill him, as well as the entire city nearby as collateral damage. As it turns out, the Ray Ring above is apparently home to 7 billion "Grim Reapers," nearly all of whom seek to deny their newfound love. (Source: MU)

"Okay, so I've come to another world." Before he knew it, he was alone in a mountain full of plants and creatures that he'd never seen before. When he goes down the mountain after avoiding encounters with a big slime and bandits, he reaches a castle where he is taken captive as a suspicious person. While being interrogated in the dungeon by the female knight Irias, he talks about the bandits he saw, and Irias, who was at wit's end in the search for said bandits, quickly hunts them down. He doesn't want to be a hero, or to build a harem: "I just want to live safely." A story that such a man who survives in another world with "understanding" as a weapon! In the mid 21st century, human civilization is in dire straits. Gene technology had found a huge market, and due to huge profits, research had accelerated accordingly. An "immortality" gene no longer seemed like a mere dream. However, a sample of this gene was accidentally mixed with a biohazard, creating a new life-form. "They" also took in genetic materials from the natural world, evolving into an enemy that has invaded the human world. The "Shahel" are now a force capable of defeating human military forces, and at this point in time both the North and South American continents have fallen under their control. The USA, among others, no longer exists on the map. In Japan, the government has created and is working on improving a "samurai" unit to oppose the Shahel, utilizing soldiers enhanced with nano-machines to connect with an armored exoskeleton. It is at this point that Tsukahara Takemichi is assigned to the 1st platoon at the "Place of the Samurai."
